What can you do when the shelf life of food has expired🤔

Can you still consume when the shelf life of the food has expired? It would probably end up in the waste bin.

According to German food experts, expired food can still be consumed. As long as the food still looks good, does not smell bad, and most important still tastes great.

Janina Delp from the initiative “Zu Gut Fuer Die Tonne” (translated “Too Good for the Trash”) said that some manufacturers provided “best before” date does not mean that it is the date to throw away the food.

  1. Cooking oil
After you have opened your bottle of oil, store it in the fridge to extend their shelf life. You can also pour into smaller portions to use for cooking and keep the big bottle in the fridge.
If you are not cooking often, consider buying a smaller bottle.
  2. Eggs
You can test whether an egg is still fresh by placing it in a glass of water. A fresh egg will sink and lay on its side. But if it stands up straight at the bottom of the glass, it might not be so fresh but still can be eaten. However, if the egg floats, it can be way past its shelf life, and time to throw into the waste bin.
The fresher the egg, the better the flavor. Your omelets, scrambled eggs, and egg sandwiches will be noticeably more robust in flavor if you use the freshest eggs possible.
When you noticed that your eggs are not so fresh, try using them to bake your favorite cake or cookies. Because when it comes to baking, the freshness of the egg doesn’t have a big impact on the taste of your baked goods.

  3. Bread
Keep the bread in the fridge before it becomes stale and moldy. Make salad croutons to add into your salad. Or have tasty toasted garlic butter bread for breakfast. You can also toast garlic butter bread fingers. Just spread garlic butter onto the bread, cut into thin slices and bake them in the oven till brown and crispy. They make great dips with your mushroom or pumpkin soup. You can even add on some carrot or celery sticks and you have yourself a great simple meal.
  4. Fruits
When some fruits have lost its firmness but still good to eat, you can make delicious jam. Jam which was made from mashed fruit and sweetened while cold, can last up to 2 weeks in the fridge.
However, if the fruit was thoroughly cooked on the stove, the jam can be stored in a cool dark place or in a fridge for up to a year. Some homemade jam can turn slightly brown or grey after a few months due to the influence of light, but they are still yummy.
  5. Chocolate
When chocolate is way past its shelf life, it is better to taste it first before thinking of using or eating it. If it tastes bad, it is suggested to throw it away. Because the bad flavor will come through even you use the chocolate for baking or cooking.
If the chocolate has gone through up and down temperature changes, the chocolate may not be safe to eat. Temperature changes can promote bacterial growth.
If you still think it is safe to eat, try to melt it and use it for baking or melt it into a syrup for your favorite chocolate drink.
